DuPont Nature Center

May 16, 2017 By Becca Leave a Comment

If you’re ever in the Milford area and have a little spare time with the munchkins, make sure to swing by the DuPont Nature Center. I can almost guess with *almost* certainty that the road to get there is one you’ve never been on, and that’s an adventure in itself. We actually passed a random group of guinea hens on the side of the road and saw a rotating drawbridge open so that a boat could pass through.

We arrived before they opened at 10am (make sure you check the hours before you go, as they vary seasonably) so we watched an osprey pair and some of the other birds hanging around in the area and the boys played in the rocks. There are porta potties outside (I feel like I talk about porta potties in every post!) but if you need to go, don’t use them! There are bathrooms inside the building.

The nature center is fairly small, so plan on spending about 30-40 minutes there. The naturalists were kind enough to take some of the creatures out of the touch tank to give the boys a face to face view with a four year old horseshoe crab and a hermit crab. We checked out the other tanks, as well as the live horseshoe crab cam to see all the mating action out on the shore. There’s also a little coloring area for the little ones.

And if you happen to read this at just the right time of year, make sure you check out the “Peace, Love and Horseshoe Crab Festival” that is held at the nature center annually in late May.
