I have a confession. I have never been blueberry picking (that I can remember) before! I don’t know how that can possibly be, but we crossed that off my bucket list at Fifer Orchards recently.
If your kids are like mine, they can out away some fruit and blueberries are a favorite! It is super important for our kids to grow up knowing where their food comes from so this is a multipurpose activity.
Get the kids outside? Check!
Teach them where their food comes from? Check!
Gorge on blueberries? Check!
The boys were fortunate to have an experienced blueberry picker with us on this adventure, their Nana. D quickly learned how to tell which berries were ripe, and which ones to leave on the bush. The blueberry patch opens at 9am, so we were able to get in and out before it got too hot. You get a HUGE bucket of blueberries for $12, so fill it all the way to the top! You can also buy them by the quart but that would only last us one day. It looked like there were at least two more weeks of berries available as there were plenty that weren’t ripe yet.
Fifer’s is an all around awesome place. We love their market especially because they have a little bit of everything. Honey, jams, fruit, veggies, peanut butter, olive oil, APPLE CIDER DONUTS!, slushies, and of course ice cream from Vanderwende’s Creamery!
After our we picked our share of berries we sat in the shade at a picnic table to eat ice cream and then the boys each took a ride on the tire swing before we headed home!
