Unicorn Lake Fishing Park

June 29, 2016 By Becca 1 Comment

Haven’t heard of Unicorn Lake? Neither had I. In my usual method of searching for green blobs on the map I came across the fishing park and added it to the bucket list for a day when we didn’t have time to drive an hour for an adventure. For us, Millington, MD is only about 20-25 minutes away.

We were the only people there when we visited over the weekend, which is just how I like it. I don’t have to reign the boys in as much when we go someplace that isn’t crowded so they’re happier too. Even though it’s a fishing destination, I didn’t bring our gear because I didn’t have the energy to take that on at the time but I figured the boys could just wander around and do their favorite thing in the whole world: throw things in to the water.

The park is actually made up of one large lake, a stream and a bunch of smaller ponds. It was really quiet and peaceful…if you are able to block out your own kids, haha. The thing I loved most about this place is that I was able to park myself in the shade by one of the ponds that didn’t have a steep drop off at the water’s edge and the two of them actually entertained themselves by finding sticks and rocks and pinecones and throwing them in to the water. You read that right. THEY ENTERTAINED THEMSELVES! This is very rare for my kids so it was huge for me. I wish I had brought a chair (or a hammock??) and a magazine because they would have been happy there for quite some time.

We saw a blue heron, fish, turtles and some adorable baby toads which the boys had mixed emotions about. D loved the toad and wasn’t afraid to hold it. O on the other hand was very wary and insisted that it was a bug. He will come around eventually!

Additionally, there were several piles of dirt. The average person might walk right by them and not even notice their presence. A mom however, could spot them 50 yards away and know that their kids were going to be going home filthy. I don’t know what it is about a dirt pile that is an instant kid magnet, but these particular piles of dirt were full of rocks which might as well be hunks of gold to my kids. More ammo for throwing in the water!

There are picnic tables as well, so if you want to make a morning of it you can bring you fishing gear and a picnic lunch and enjoy a low key, fun, outdoorsy time together!

Fairmount Park- Centennial Arboretum

What kind of mental picture do you get when you think of Philadelphia? Big cities are such a juxtaposition between beauty and filth in my personal opinion. Everywhere you look there are piles of trash, graffiti, and dilapidated buildings. Philly has more than its' fair share of those things BUT it … [Read More...]
